Who needs this course?

This level 1 course is intended for

• Staff who handle or prepare low risk foods, that is to say not ready to eat food (e.g. raw meat and uncooked finished products)
• Staff who receive the course as part of their induction, using it as a basis for further training
• Staff who work in the food industry in non-production roles (e.g. packers, drivers and warehouse personnel.)

This City and guilds accredited course has been carefully written to ensure candidates cover all the necessary topics to provide them with an excellent basic course to ensure they handle food safely. The course is in 12 short sections, with full audio voice over to ensure clarity and understanding.

Course Content for Level 1 Award in Food Safety for Manufacturing

This level one awareness course follows industry standards and national occupational standards as set by Improve Ltd. This course is recommended for all workers in food manufacture who handle low risk foods.

The content of the course is in twelve sections:

• Introduction
• The importance and use of correct ppe
• Correct hand-washing techniques
• The importance of reporting an illness
• The importance of wound dressings
• Good personal behaviour and individual responsibility
• Keeping the work area clean + tidy
• Waste disposal
• Food safety hazards
• Contamination and cross-contamination
• Correct procedures for working with and storing food
• Hazards caused by pests

Duration

About 1 hour, but the course can be taken at the speed of the user.

Testing

When the candidate is ready, there is a multi-choice test comprising 20 questions. The questions come from a question bank, enabling each candidate (if in an IT room) to have a different testing experience. Successful candidates must achieve 15 correct answers, which are marked instantly, electronically.

Certification

Successful candidates can then print their city and guilds accredited certificate from their own PC, a central PC, or print it from another PC of their choice. Candidate results are stored on the City and Guilds “walled garden” – their certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

• QMust all my staff start on a level 1 award?
• ANo, Some companies like to start on a level 1 and progress through to level 2 or even level 3 food safety, but there is no need to do that. You should look at the individual’s job role and start the worker on the appropriate level. Some workers will therefore start on level 2. You cannot start workers directly onto a level 3 food safety however.
• QMy company makes sausages, is the level 1 food safety course appropriate for them?
• AYes. It is quite sufficient. Sausages are not eaten raw (usually!) and are therefore classed as low risk.
• QAre there any translations for this course?
• AYes, please look on our website, we are always pleased to undertake translations for sufficient numbers.
• QQ. How long do I have to pass the certification?
• AOnce you have paid your course and received your access codes, the course will be available for one year. If you do not pass the certification within this period, the course expires.
